We were once a nation who embraced the smoothie, impressed by the ease of vitamins-on-the-go. But research from Mintel suggests that sugar scares which hit headlines in previous years are turning people away from manufactured fruit in a bottle, with revelations of the drink’s high sugar content.
Stats reveal there has been a decline in the amount of people buying shop-sold smoothies, and sales are expected to continue to drop as we become more health-conscious.
So if you need a fruit fix, Health Director Julie Powell says to opt for home-made smoothies, which are far healthier than shop bought ones, juices or sugary drinks (they contain all the fibre and have a higher vitamin content as they’re freshly made). 'It’s a good idea to make them with veggies (or fruit plus veggies) to keep calories and sugar low,' she adds.
